The industry scored another victory today when Joel Tenenbaum was given a $675,000 fine for sharing 30 copyrighted songs on a P2P site. See the blog at: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/146827
The hammer is coming down folks! Or maybe, I should say, the pincers are clamping down, because I really think the industry's strategy for dealing with us file sharers is two-fold.
First, like Joel, they attack in the court room. Let's face it, Joel is not the biggest fish out there. He shared 30 songs!! The industry is using him to convey a message to the rest of us. Pay or don't play!
Second, I believe the industry is actively enlisting the aid of experienced hackers to sabatoge web sites explicitly sharing files. I have personally gotten a very nasty worm right here at justin.tv when I scrolled through the social contacts channels list. I had to pull the plug and reboot my whole system, losing a lot of time and disc space (not to mention files)! I learned, and have a stronger security going now, but the point is that sites like ours are targets for corporate "counter-insurgency". If they can't stop us from sharing files they'll stop our computers.
The old acorn is "Buyer Beware", but with file-sharing perhaps it's also true to say "Gleaner Beware".
