Intro

Many community members would love to run a show with a co-host, presently we don't have a way of doing this with Justin.tv by itself, however, here is a quick tutorial of how you could do it (if you're willing to download some programs to help you). We mention programs like Camtwist (for Mac) and Super Webcam but you could use Webcammax or Manycam just the same.

Before you start please keep in mind that co-hosting requires a lot of bandwidth so it is recommended that your internet connection is at least 1.5Mbit/s download and 768kbit/s upload. It is also recommended that you broadcast in H264. Please also note that during the time of this writing there is no way to control the bitrate of the Skype video, so if you are on a slower connection consider using the Justin.tv broadcaster, QTB, or FME and not broadcasting your video on the Skype call.

You could do this from either a Mac or a Windows machine, below is a breakdown of each. For audio, I describe the easiest thing without having to buy much additional hardware, however, if you want the best quality audio a mixer is probably the best bet.

PC

  1. Download Super Webcam
  2. Download Skype
  3. Use Skype to make Video call with cohost (Their picture would be the largest) and you have the bonus of having both of your voices, if you don't want a webcam you don't have to have one just the cohost.
  4. Use Super Webcam to capture the Skype video window (making Super webcam your "webcam" for all intents and purposes)
  5. Let your audio play over your speakers as usual (letting any external Microphone pick up both your voice and the voice of your cohost at the same time)
  6. Use the Justin.tv broadcaster, select Super Webcam as your Camera and your external microphone as your mic.

Other Considerations

  • With Super Webcam you can create overlays, you could label the name of your speaker so that others know who it is.
  • Do a two way video chat with them on Skype (or have a webcamera set up and do a Picture-in-picture with Super Webcam)
  • Don't capture the entire video window if the co-host has a lot of empty space around them. Just capture the area around the person to keep the attention on the person and not their surroundings.
