XSplit Broadcaster is a program that provides built-in video, audio, and media tools for an all-in-one streaming application. It is a free application that is currently in beta.

What you need to get started

Registering an XSplit account

To get started with XSplit Broadcast go to XSplit homepage and register to gain access to a beta account. Once you have registered it will prompt you to download then install the program.

When you open the XSplit it will prompt you for the XSplit's account e-mail and password. Once you log in you will see the main interface. From here you are able to add your channel information to stream on your Justin.tv channel, change audio and video quality settings, and add media elements to your broadcast.

XSplit allows streamers to switch between twelve different sources called scenes. To add a new image or video element select one of the 12 scene boxes and click Add. If you want to stream a first person view of a video game choose Add Screen Region and select the dimensions you want to broadcast.

To add your Justin.tv channel information, from the main window go to Broadcast > Edit Channels... > Add ... > Justin.tv

In the top Channel section type in your Justin.tv username and password. The name of your channel(s) will appear in the drop down window.

Channel settings

Under Video Encoding add the ideal bitrate you've determined your Internet connection can handle, and input double that number in the buffer area. You can raise or lower the quality setting from the default of 6 depending on your computer's ability to handle video encoding.

Under Audio Encoding you can increase or lower the audio bitrate to match your streaming needs. If you require high quality audio, for instance if you are broadcasting human voice, then increase the bitrate to a suitable level.

The general tab provides options for the sources of video and audio from which XSplit can draw including Skype and your microphone, and allows you to record your stream to your hard drive.

Troubleshooting

If you are experiencing an issue with XSplit make sure that you are using the latest version of the software. You can check from the main window by going to Help > Check for Updates...

Mouse Pointer Flicker - Navigate to the screen capture source to find and uncheck the Capture layered windows option.

Screen Capture Lag - Select the screen capture source, find the option optimize for motion picture and unselect it.

To fix the screen capture lag in the latest release, right click on the screen capture source and then uncheck "Optimize for motion picture". To fix the mouse pointer flicker, right click on the screen capture source and then uncheck "Capture layered windows".
